About

Dr. Karthika S B is an Assistant Professor of English at Fatima Mata National College (Autonomous), Kollam, and serves as an approved Doctoral Research Supervisor at the University of Kerala. The daughter of renowned critic Dr. R. Bhadran Pillai, she carries forward a distinguished literary tradition through her work in adaptation, performance, and critical theory. She completed her Post-Doctoral research at the School of Letters, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, with a specialized focus on Kathakali adaptations of Shakespearean drama. Her doctoral dissertation investigated cinematic adaptations of Shakespeare’s works, and she holds an M.Phil. in Theatre Arts as well as an M.A. in English from the University of Kerala. Her academic credentials are further supported by professional certifications including NET, SET, KTET, and B.Ed. As an author and editor, Dr. Karthika has published five scholarly volumes addressing literary criticism, film adaptations, and theatre studies. Her monograph *Shakespeare in Malayalam Celluloid* (2019, Media House) examines cinematic adaptations in regional cinema and is archived in international academic repositories, including the Penn Libraries at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Zurich Library, and the Shakespeare Institute Library in Stratford-upon-Avon. She also edited *Bennyaminte Novel Lokam* (DC Books), which has been incorporated into the postgraduate curriculum at the School of Letters, Mahatma Gandhi University. Her other published titles include *Lokanadaka Pareekshanagal* (2019, Dream Bookbindery), *Malayala Vimarshanathile Bhadramargam*, and *A Companion to Literary Criticism*. Dr. Karthika’s research footprint encompasses articles in peer-reviewed and UGC CARE-listed journals, such as *Indian Literature* (bimonthly journal of the Kendra Sahitya Akademi), *Malayalam Literary Survey*, *Chalachithra Sameeksha*, *Journal of Literature and Aesthetics*, and the *Indian Journal of Postcolonial Literatures*. Her article, “Indian Hamlet in Action: V. K. Prakash’s Karmayogi and Vishal Bhardwaj’s Haider,” has been included in the undergraduate syllabus of Chinmaya Vishwavidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) across the disciplines of English and Education. She has contributed chapters to academic collections, including volumes published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing and Lulu Press, and authored the preface to *Stretched Angles: A Collaborative Poetic Exploration of Four South Indian Writers* (Nirmithi Publications). Her upcoming scholarly projects include a chapter contribution to *The Routledge Companion to Dostoevsky* (University of Leeds) and serving as an article translator for an English essay collection based on Sunny M. Kapikkad's *Janathayum Janathipathyavum* (Orient Blackswan). Her primary research interests lie at the intersection of Shakespearean Studies, Adaptation Studies, Performance Studies, Translation Studies, Postcolonial Theory, and independent inquiry into Russian literary translations. In addition to her research and publishing, Dr. Karthika guides doctoral candidates in areas ranging from climate narratives and travel literature to menstrual studies. She frequently serves as an invited speaker, resource person, and session chair at national and international conferences, lecturing on topics such as gamification in literature, adaptation theory, and regional translations at institutions including Sree Narayana College, Catholicate College, Providence Women's College, and K.E. College. In her institutional role, she tutors B.A. English cohorts and has spearheaded pedagogical initiatives such as the "Storyland" classroom library, the *Zephyr* class journal, *The Critical Quill* blog, the Reels and Pages Club, and various skill enhancement and remedial programs. Her creative and critical work has been recognized with honors including the Poiesis Award (2025), the Indian Woman Writer Award (2021), the Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Sahithyasree National Award, the J. C. Daniel Nanma Puraskaram, the Kunchan Nambiar Award for Best Critical Text, and first prize in the National Poetry Competition for Teachers.
